5 Steps to Update your Resume in 15 Minutes

Updating your resume does not have to take hours. Here are 5 steps you can do in about 15 minutes.

  1. Update dates and titles: Add your current role if it is missing. Update end dates for previous jobs. Fix any wrong titles or company names.
  2. Add one or two new bullets: For your current role, add 1–2 bullets for recent achievements. Use strong verbs and numbers where possible.
  3. Refresh your summary: Read it and update 1–2 lines so they reflect your current role and strengths. Keep it to 2–4 lines.
  4. Add or update keywords: Skim a recent job description in your field. Add 2–3 relevant keywords to your summary or skills section where they fit.
  5. Check file and name: Save as PDF. Use a clear file name: FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf. Proofread the first and last paragraphs.

Do this at least once a year or after any major achievement or role change. For a specific job, spend extra time tailoring the summary and bullets to that role.
